Cartagena Without Filters: Inside the Walls, the Caribbean Heat, and the Magic of Its Streets
If you ask me about a city that feels alive on every corner, that city is Cartagena. There’s something about the combination of humid heat, the smell of the sea, and music playing in the background that pulls you in the moment you arrive.
I had read a thousand things about “La Heroica,” but experiencing it firsthand is a completely different story. Cartagena isn’t just a historic destination; it’s a constant collision of color, contrast, and Caribbean energy that doesn’t ask for permission. Here’s what it was like exploring the city at my own pace, getting lost among its streets and discovering those corners that don’t always make it into the traditional guidebooks.
1. Getting Lost in the Historic Center and San Diego
The city walls don’t just contain history; they surround a maze of colonial façades, balconies overflowing with bougainvillea, and plazas where time seems to move a little more slowly.
The perfect plan: Forget the map for a couple of hours. Wander without a set destination in the late afternoon, when the golden light falls across the yellow and blue façades.
My must-do stop: Grab some fresh-cut fruit from a palenquera in Plaza de Bolívar, or enjoy an iced coffee at a quiet corner to beat the afternoon heat.
Travel note: Cartagena’s sun is no joke. Plan your longer walks for early morning or after 4:00 PM. Around midday, it’s best to find some shade and cool off with something very cold to drink.
2. Getsemaní: The Rebellious, Bohemian Heart
If the historic center feels elegant and stately, Getsemaní is pure urban life, art, and authenticity. Without a doubt, it was the neighborhood that captivated me the most.
Street art with a story: The streets of Getsemaní, such as Calle de la Sierpe and Callejón Ancho, feel like an open-air gallery. Every mural tells a story of resistance, Afro-Caribbean culture, and everyday life.
The nighttime vibe: As night falls, Plaza de la Trinidad transforms. Locals and travelers gather on the church steps to listen to street musicians, watch impromptu performances, or enjoy a local beer.
3. Escape to the Sea: The Rosario Islands
While Cartagena’s urban beaches are great for an afternoon stroll, the real marine magic lies just 45 minutes away by speedboat.
A day in the archipelago: Renting a boat or taking a day trip to a boutique beach club in the Rosario Islands is the perfect contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city.
Turquoise water: Snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the national natural park and having fried fish with coconut rice and patacones while looking out over the sea is what true relaxation feels like.
Tips From a Friend for Making the Most of Cartagena:
Learn to say “no, thank you” with a smile: The city has a very active informal economy. If someone offers you a massage, a song, or a craft you don’t want, simply respond politely but firmly and keep walking.
A strategic sunset: Everyone heads to Café del Mar on the city walls, but if you want to avoid the crowds, grab a cold drink from a local vendor and sit directly on the rampart near San Pedro Claver. The view is essentially the same, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed.
What to wear: Super-light linen or cotton clothing, comfortable shoes for walking on cobblestone streets, and sunscreen always within reach.
