Portugal’s Azores: The First Transatlantic Port That Took My Breath Away

There are travel moments that quietly stay with you forever.
For me, one of those moments happened in Portugal’s Azores Islands, when our transatlantic cruise made its first stop in Ponta Delgada.

I didn’t expect the Azores to feel this powerful. I didn’t expect the air to be so fresh, the landscapes so dramatic, or the sense of calm to be so immediate. And yet, the moment we arrived, it was clear — this wasn’t just another port. This was an experience.

Ponta Delgada: Where the Atlantic Meets Untouched Beauty

Ponta Delgada welcomes you gently. There’s no rush here, no noise trying to impress you. Instead, the island invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and truly look around.

As a travel advisor, I’ve visited many destinations, but the Azores feel different. There’s something raw and authentic about this place — a feeling that nature is still in control, and we’re simply guests.

From the harbor, you can already sense it: lush green hills, volcanic landscapes, and a horizon that feels endless.

Some places don’t need words — but they deserve them anyway.

One of the most unforgettable sights in the Azores is Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde, also known as the Blue and Green Lakes. Standing there, overlooking the lagoon, I understood why this spot is considered one of the 7 Wonders of Portugal.

What makes these lakes so extraordinary is that they are actually one single lagoon, divided visually by two striking colors.
The contrast between blue and green isn’t a trick of the light — it comes from differences in volcanic composition within the water.

The result is surreal.

On one side, the water reflects deep blue tones, calm and mysterious.
On the other, rich green hues mirror the surrounding vegetation, vibrant and alive.

It feels like nature decided to paint with intention.

Why the Azores Feel So Special

The Azores aren’t flashy. They don’t try to compete with big European cities or famous beach destinations. Instead, they offer something rarer:

  • Unspoiled volcanic landscapes

  • Clean, powerful Atlantic air

  • A deep connection between land, water, and sky

  • A sense of peace you don’t realize you’ve been missing

This is a destination for travelers who appreciate beauty that speaks softly — but leaves a lasting impression.

A Perfect First Stop on a Transatlantic Cruise

As our first transatlantic cruise port, Ponta Delgada couldn’t have been more perfect. After days at sea, arriving here felt grounding. It reminded me why travel matters — not just to see places, but to feel them.

The Azores don’t overwhelm you.
They reset you.

Would I Recommend the Azores? Absolutely.

Whether you arrive by cruise or plan a longer stay, the Azores Islands are a destination I genuinely recommend to travelers seeking something meaningful, natural, and unforgettable.

And if you’re considering adding Portugal’s Azores to your itinerary — I’d be happy to help you plan it thoughtfully, so you experience the islands in the most authentic and rewarding way possible.

Some places you visit.
Others stay with you.

The Azores are one of them.
